What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda translates as, ’Science Of Life.’ It is a holistic system of health that originated in India around 5000 years ago. The methods used in Ayurveda are always natural, focussing on lifestyle, foods and herbs to restore balance to the body and mind. Within the system is a very thorough process of diagnosis that has stood the test of time. The key component to the success of Ayurvedic practice is understanding your own unique body type. Through the discovery of your Ayurvedic constitution, namely: Vata, Pitta or Kapha, the individual can begin to understand why they have certain imbalances, why they choose to carry out certain behaviours and also what foods and lifestyle choices are best for them and which ones will cause them to go out of balance.
In its essence, Ayurveda seeks to restore balance within and without. To create a harmonious existence with our own bodies and the environment around us.

What does an Ayurveda consultation include?

The Ayurveda practitioner will take a long case history of your life, including health related issues during childhood and emotional patterns to draw a clear picture of the individual. There will also be a thorough breakdown of daily food intake and daily habits. At the end of the consultation, the practitioner will diagnose the tongue and the pulse. The pulse diagnosis is an ancient method of establishing the individuals ‘Prakruti,’ their unique constitution. It can also show any weaknesses in the tissues and organs of the body. Once the examination is complete the practitioner will draw up a specific diet and lifestyle plan, tailored to the client’s individual needs. They will then have the tools to embark on a journey of self-care and self-healing.
